About [Sasaoka] Gourd-shaped Kiribashi shears (Right-handed)

First of all, it is worth noting that it is very cost-effective. Although these pruning shears are made by hand through all the processes of forging, welding, and sharpening, they are very reasonably priced. The reason for this is simple: the cost of living in the Kochi area is lower than the standard price range in Japan.

This is a special order item among the pruning shears made by Sasaoka factory, which makes traditional Japanese pruning scissors. The gourd-shaped kiribashi was originally designed by Yoshinobu Osumi of Yasuhiro in Kyoto. With his permission, Sasaoka factory reproduced this shape.

The most notable feature of the gourd-shaped kiribashi is that it does not have a ring shape on the handle, and the tail of the grip swells once so that the little finger can put pressure on it. This makes it possible to cut through branches with less force overall. The blade is made of blue paper steel (Aogami) No. 2, which improves sharpness and durability.

For the Japanese, Kyoto is the root of Japanese culture. Therefore, traditions have been preserved and passed down for a long time, but as a side effect, it is difficult to create new things. Pruning shears are one example of this, and the traditional shape has been preserved for a long time. However, a new traditional shape has been presented. This gourd-shaped kiribashi was invented by Mr. Yoshinobu Osumi. While preserving the traditional shape of kiribashi, a new concept kiribashi was born.

Kiribashi made in Kyoto are characterized by their great looseness at the fulcrum. The gourd-shaped kiribashi made by Yoshinobu Osumi of the original also have a great deal of looseness. However, the Sasaoka kiribashi have almost no looseness, making them easy to use. Another feature of the Kyoto style is that the rivets at the fulcrum are handcrafted into a chrysanthemum pattern. This is also a style that has been completely adopted. In fact, professional gardeners all over Japan use these pruning shears.
* The looseness of the fulcrum of the original Kyoto shears is intentional. It is based on the concept that the shape of the fulcrum is optimized based on the user's habits.

About Sasaoka, the blacksmith who manufactured this product (Kochi pref)

Sasaoka (Working scene of current Tobisho's master blacksmith, Satoru Sasaoka.)

Eiji Sasaoka, the first generation, and Satoru Sasaoka, the second generation, are the only Hasami Blacksmiths in Tosa (Hasami means clippers, scissors, shears, pruners, secateurs, etc). According to Mr. Satoru, "The Mr. Eiji has a strong spirit of challenge and has great skills. And I think that my characteristic is to work carefully." In fact, the Hasami of Sasaoka that the two of them produce are a collaboration of skill and politeness. Looking at the mallet marks and sharpening marks, you can feel the warmth of handmade. On the other hand, when you actually use it, it cuts smoothly. The Hasami and knives in particular are carefully hand-sharpened, so the blades are very beautiful. Another feature of Sasaoka Scissors Manufacturing is that they can produce a wide variety of cutlery and tools using scissors as their basic technology. At the age of 24, Mr. Eiji set up a blacksmith factory here in Ino City, Kochi Prefecture, but when he was making Hasami, neighbors asked him to make kitchen knives and farming tools. Mr. Eiji, who has a strong spirit of challenge, quickly expanded the product categories of Sasaoka.
